If you are adopted: check this blog.

I encountered this blog about adoption yesterday. It is an interesting and unusual theme for a blog. I was researching the story of Mariya Nikolaevna Yashenkova, known in the U.S. as Masha Elizabeth Allen, who was five-years-old in 1998 when 41-year-old Matthew Mancuso adopted her from a Russian orphanage and brought her to his home in the small western Pennsylvania hamlet of Plum.

Over the next five years, Mancuso sexually abused and exploited Masha, videotaping and photographing her in various stages of abuse, and posting the images on the internet to share with others members of an online community of pedophiles and child pornography fans. One series of photos showed Masha being abused in a hotel room that was later determined to be in a resort at Disney World in Florida, leading to Masha's infamous moniker, the Disney World girl.

The world according to the newspapers.

The cartograms below show the world through the eyes of editors-in-chief, in 2007. Countries swell as they receive more media attention; others shrink as we forget them.

These maps allow you to grasp several media trends at a glance. First, traditional newspapers are highly selective in their coverage of world news. Looking at the three British dailies, editors favour countries that are bigger and more populous, but also closer to home and better developed. They also give more room to the countries of origin of British immigrants, especially if they are white (look at the size of Australia and New-Zealand). Hardly surprising, but still disheartening, especially when you consider that the only brand that does not advocate objectivity, The Economist, covers the world more equally.

Second, we see that web-only outlets do not offer such a different view of the world. That makes sense, considering the narrowing of the news agenda on the web that was described in the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s
latest report. Their lack of resources forces them to contract their scope. Smaller issues are better covered by the blogosphere, which seems unbeatable at providing niche news.

Hot Geeky Girl: Christine Lu

Second post of this serie which started with iJustine. Why Christine Lu? Well I am a follower of her posts on Twitter. And it is Christine with "h". Cristine Lu without "h" is, for what I've seen around the web, a porn star. Not that I visit porn sites. Not that there is anything wrong with that either.

Christine is not really in techno. But I think she uses the web 2.0 pretty well. On the Fast Company site, we can learn that she is the Chairman and founder of The China Business Network and Executive Producer and Host of The China Business Show, a weekly talk radio show focused on doing business in China. During this time, she also founded, with partner Janet Carmosky, a women's portal and e-commerce dot-com.

In 2004, Christine returned to the USA and launched an online kitchenware business that maintains eBay Gold Powerseller status and is a featured merchant on Amazon.com's Seller Network. In March 2007 Christine created and served as the Executive Producer and Host of Entrepreneur Magazine's The China Business Show which has since evolved into The China Business Network, a media and networking platform for those in the international business community doing business in China.

Hot Geeky Girl: iJustine.

I am starting a new serie of posts about sexy geeky girls. Being in Argentina for almost two years now, surrounded by beautiful ladies (especially my wife and daughter). Submerged in the Web for two years, I had the opportunity to realiza that geeks (girls) can be sexy too. This morning, I saw this post in Valleywag and this gave me the idea to post once in a while about those geek girls that have a little "je ne sais quoi".

I will begin with iJustine the lifecasting rising star. She turned 24 today. Happy Birthday! According to Valleywag:

" Want to send her a present? We suggest a Starbucks gift card. Not only will it get her
free wireless after AT&T moves in, but you'll be hooking Justine up with her favorite drink: a triple grande nonfat no-whip 6-pump extra-hot white mocha. "

Ashley Dupre's clubing pictures and the Girls gone wild video.

I lied. It seems that the last post about Miss Dupre won't be last the after all. A few minutes ago, I did send an email to the four hotels mentioned. Waiting for their reaction. Meanwhile, to fight boredom, let's watch the Girls Gone Wild video featuring Ashley and some clubing pictures found on the New York Post.

Here are some facts found on Mahalo. Before Ashley Alexandra Dupre became involved with former New York governor Eliot Spitzer, the alleged call girl was involved with the Girls Gone Wild organization in Miami, Florida during Spring Break of 2003. Dupre reportedly celebrated her 18th birthday aboard the Girls Gone Wild (GGW) tour bus during a week-long filming session.

On March 18, 2008, Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis, newly released from a Nevada prison (for tax evasion), offered Dupre $1M for a DVD and publicity tour. Francis shortly rescinded the offer, claiming that GGW already possessed footage of her.

According to reports, Dupre also appears in footage on the Girls Gone Wild: Spring Break 2005 - Anything Goes DVD. During the same whirlwind week, Francis pleaded no contest to charges in Florida stemming from filming underage girls in Panama City during Spring Break 2003. Dupre's legal name is Ashley DiPietro, although her birth name was Ashley Youmans.

Ashley Dupre and Emperors Club VIP: the St-Regis, Mandarin Oriental, Palace, W Hotel group.

Four luxury hotels or hotel groups are on the prostitution ring website Emperors Club VIP: the St-Regis, Mandarin Oriental group, the Palace and Whotels group. They are located at the bottom in the sponsors/links section of the web page. Were they sponsors or simply links? Were they using the service? Were they part of the ring? When I have time this week, I will send some mails to see what the managers have to say about that.

This is the last of four posts ( one, two and three)about Ashley Dupre and the Emperors Club VIP. The web.archive.org still have some parts of the ring web page. To check some of the former escorts picture you can go to the latter or here to this blog.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre: more photos and videos

To continue the story about Spitzer's call girl started on the last post, here are more photos and some links to interviews with his former pimp and members of her family.

According to CNN, her MySpace and Fcebook's profiles evolved with the scandal. Early Thursday morning, it appears Dupre realized she needed to make some changes to alter what the public would be able to know about her.

At 3 a.m., there was an entry that she had completed a "thorough profile scrub," leaving only a couple of photos of herself on Facebook.

At the same time, the self-described aspiring musician left a clip of one of her songs on MySpace and frequently linked to a page where users could download it.

The early morning hours slipped by and Internet activity on Facebook continued until 5 a.m., when she apparently confronted the high school classmates on the group page. It seemed she believed they were trying to exploit her situation.

By 2:30 p.m. Thursday the Facebook and MySpace profiles were gone, but they reappeared Friday.

Spitzer's callgirl, Ashley Dupre, on MySpace.

Maybe the collaterally damaged former governor Spitzer and his callgirl friend "Kristen" should take an appointment with their MD. I just read this morning in an article on CBSNews site that:

"Certain head and neck cancers may be tied to sexual activity (oral sex), marijuana use, and human papillomavirus (HPV ) type 16."

Since, it is not clear if the problem with oral sex affects the giver or the receiver, both should go see their doctor right away.

Anyway, if you want to see pictures of "Kristen" before neck cancer ruins her lovely body, you will be glad to know that she has two MySpace pages: one under
Ashley Alexandra Dupré and one under ninavenetta.

In the latter, you can even listen to her singing. Yeap! She is one talented mouth, she can sing too. Should she? It is all a matter of taste. And you can't discuss taste, especially, when you don't have any. You can even buy her (singing) talent here.

She also has a video. Behind the scene video.

Collateral damage: Spitzer busted by IT.

First, I saw the news on ValleyWag :

" What really snared Spitzer was a money laundering investigation flagged by suspicious activity reports (SARs) that banks have to file with the Treasury ... The prostitution ring that counted Spitzer as a customer was investigated due to some shady bank accounts, checks and wire transfers with big totals ($39,000, $400,000 and others)."

The post links to this
Larry Dignan's article on ZDnet.

Well, it seems that Spitzer was only collateral damage. Too bad for him.

Cyberbullying reaches the executive level. The Paul Tilley suicide.

Is it possible that one morning, after turning on his laptop, reading some harsch posts about him and his company in two industry insiders blogs, a top executive kisses his eggs and bacon goodbye, goes up on the hotel roof and jumps to his death? I think not...

Last October, the blogosphere woke up to cyberbullying through the suicide of
Megan Meier. Late week, cyberbullying was blamed for the suicide of Paul Tilley. Megan Meier was a teenage girl with an history of depressions who was caught in the middle of a sadistic hoax to hurt and humiliate her on purpose. Paul Tilley was a grown man and a top advertising executive responsable, among other things, of the "I love it" McDonald's campaign. Some commentators were quick to blame a pair of posts published on AgencySpy and AdScam, two sharp-tongued blogs written by advertising industry insiders. So, can we speak of cyberbullying here? I repeat, I think not.

I am sorry for the loss of Tilley's family and friends. But, I do think (although it is almost impossible to know what is going on in the suicidee's mind) that obviously something had broken a while ago in Tilley's professional or personal life. You don't throw yourself off the hotel roof after reading bad reviews or criticisms in the media. There wouldn't be many artists or politicians left, if it were the case. To have worked that long in the competitive advertising business surely made him teflon coated to criticisms. To become that sensitive all of a sudden, something had been going wrong for sometimes now.

But many are disagreeing with my point of view. Says the
New York Times:

"Visitors to AgencySpy and AdScam, two sharp-tongued blogs written by advertising industry insiders, posted comments blaming the sites for contributing to the suicide late last month of Paul Tilley, 40, the creative director of DDB Chicago.

In so doing, bloggers and their readers added another chapter in a long debate about how, or whether, to manage anonymous posts that seem aimed at shredding a person's reputation."

And says
Arrington:

"The New York Times today is reporting about the suicide of advertising exec Paul Tilley, saying that it that might be linked to heavy criticisms about the person on a blog. The blogger, an anonymous woman, takes no responsibility. She says 'I'm saddened by Paul Tilley's death, but I do not feel that my blog postings contributed to the events that occurred' and boasted about the sites traffic growth since the incident. The blog in question is owned by JupiterMedia and counts IAC and the Wall Street Journal as advertisers."

At Adscam, the other blogger, who has been blamed, counterattacks:

"Seems like there's a shitstorm over at
Agency Spy about Paul Tilley's suicide, with a lot of people blaming Spy, Lewis Lazare, and me for this guys decision to throw himself off the roof of the Fairmont Hotel. I even had an email from someone claiming to be a relative telling me I should be ashamed of myself. All because I did a post on January 16th talking about the troubles at DDB Chicago and quoting part of a Tilley memo... "too many of you are only doing good work. And some of you are doing work that simply isn't good enough." To which my response was... Fuck. That'll make the troops sit up, not to mention rapidly getting their books in shape!... And if anyone thinks that's enough to make someone kill themselves, then they need serious fucking help..."

Here is some livingroom psychology 101. Some of the people close to Paul Tilley are feeling bad right now for the loss, but also, because they feel guilty for not having seen the suicide coming. One way to handle that guilt is to blame some external cause. Maybe the posts triggered in some way Paul Tilley's decision. But, in my view, this was bound to happen soon. It could have been a coworker rumor or a comment from his boss that could have triggered the tragedy as well.

I know that bullying exists at any age. But with adulthood, it usually becomes more subtle and we learn to deal with it or just don't give a f'... about it. Anonymous cyberbullying in adulthood ... please. Unfortunately, this is teen territory (or wasteland) as demonstrated in the Megan Meier/MySpace's case and those of
seven UK teenagers whose deaths were linked to the social networking site Bebo.

Or is it another proof that as adults nowadays, we have not grown past our teenage years?

Wales vs Marsden: love stinks even for (especially) for geeks.

You know what they say: God gave us a brain and a penis, but not enough blood to use both at the same time. A good example of that. The short-term fling between Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, and Rachel Marsden, conservative canadian columnist, is ending in a nasty public breakup. Is there any hope for reconciliation? I bet not. At least not for a while. Right now, they are quite busy on thier own. Wales is now accused of spending Wikipedia Foundation funds "to get laid". Marsden wants to reintegrate the journalism market.

On Friday, February 29th, Valleywag, Silicon Valley's gossip blog, reported that Wales, who is divorcing his second wife Christine, had been secretly seeing conservative TV commentator Rachel Marsden since last fall.

It seems that Wales encountered Marsden through Wikipedia. In March 2006, Marsden announced
on the site she would seek help from Wales. Later that summer, Wales commented that the article was "over the top" and is said to have warned the page's editors. By November 2006, there were reports that Wales had listened to Marsden's complaints in person. In August 2007, Wales separated from his wife Christine and began seeking a divorce. Most recently, a tipster told Valleywag that Wales " sent a mass email to a 'special' Wikipedia list of admins at the beginning of February, right before he was set to spend the weekend with Marsden in DC. Said he wanted her page cleaned up."

But, is Wales losing his head over his flirts? Judge by yourself. There were rumors that he had intentions to move Wikipedia from Florida to New York where Marsden is based. Now, a former coworker, Danny Wool, a top administrator, is accusing him to use to the non-profit organization's credit card for personal use. For instance, he would have billed the cost of a massage in a visit to Moscow, $ 1,300 for food in Florida and special wine bottles. That led him with an approximate $ 30,000 debt with the organization. That is how a geek impresses women. Then , on a chat with Marsden, he expresses his hope that his startup, Wikia, would make him enough money to buy a jet to have a new option to have more sex with her.

Anyway, when the blood returned to his brain, Wales realized that Marsden was keeping a copy of all their "hot" instant messages on her Google e-mail account. Citing "friends" of the Wikipedia founder, Valleywag reported that Wales had become fearful that Marsden would use the transcripts to blackmail him and threatened to have her deported back to Canada.

So, he broke up with her with a statement published in Wikipedia. Unfortunately, the statement is no longer available because it was moved to Wales' personal blogs. Soon after, Marsden auctioned Wales' belongings still in her possesion on E-Bay Canada.

The story doesn't end here. Here's the goodbye email from Rachel to Jimmy and an IM conversation that strongly suggests Wales violated Wikipedia's rules to encourage favorable changes to Marsden's Wikipedia profile. You can also check this link to learn more details about Wales' VIP love and rockstarlike life here.

You probably don't care who Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales went to bed with, or what his official relationship to the site is now. What matters is that he's Mr. Wikipedia to thousands of volunteers who contribute to the non-profit organisation. The past week's leaked chats and emails document three acts that aren't crimes, but certainly aren't Wales leading by example. Here's the cocktail-party list to remember.

1. Wales cheated his own Wikipedia rules for a friend.
2. Wales spent lavishly while volunteers worked for free.
3. Wales had his boss lie to cover his tracks.

In this post, there are many references to Valleywag, the Silicon Valley's gossip blog. Movie and TV stars, sport stars and politicians are gossiped about. Why not the geeks? They have become stars in some ways. Well, Jimmy Wales doesn't seem to mind. He complained in an IM chat that the blog hasn't followed his sex life closely enough:

"I have shown up at many different Silicon Valley events with many different "dates" through the past year or so, although not always actually dates, so the assumption would be colleagues or whatever, and figured they would eventually pay attention to that."

Now, are the people on Twitter following him:

=

What are the bloggers saying about him:

Jimmy is not the first public figure to break up that way:
Trevor Luxton, a financier, e-mailed friends boasting of how he had received oral sex from his ex-girlfriend while speaking to his fiancée on the phone. The e-mail flashed around the world, to be read by thousands.

The American writer Robert Olen Butler sent an e-mail to five students about his split from his wife, which was equally widely circulated.

Phil Collins asked his wife for a divorce by fax.

Eddie Murphy announced his split from the Spice Girl Mel B on television, further insisting that the baby she was carrying might not be his.

Matt Damon announced – to the world and to his girlfriend Minnie Driver – that he was single on the Oprah Show.

The comedian Johnny Vegas announced his split with his girlfriend on Kiss FM, saying: "If she's listening, which would be amazing, it's not that anything went wrong, it's just that you stopped trying."

The soul singer James Brown ended his marriage by taking out a full-page advertisement in Variety.
The late Robin Cook, the former Foreign Secretary, announced his intentions to leave his wife and marry another woman via a press statement made at Heathrow.

Cyberbullying on MySpace leads to one teen's suicide.

Let's start by the end. News-Leader reported last week that St. Charles County (MO) officials did not charge anyone in an online hoax played on a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide and will not pursue charges against bloggers falsely posing on the Internet as a woman linked to the case.

Because the bloggers who posed as Lori Drew on the Internet were from outside of Missouri and had not sent messages to either family involved in the case, and the difficulty of legally proving the identity and actions of people behind their Internet addresses, charges are not being pursued in the impersonation case.

Who is this 13 year old girl and what happened to her. Check the following frame for a very good account of Megan Meier's sad ending.

Another account of the event is in Wikipedia.

Supposingly, Drew admitted to police that she created the phony MySpace profile in a bid to smoke out negative comments about her child by Megan. Now, Lori Drew denies having told to Megan's parents or the police about her involvement in the hoax profile. Things get even fuzzier with the case of the bloggers who falsely posed as her.

Below, a good frame to check wth links to several police reports.

In the Missouri's Suburban Journals, an interview with Lori Drew who now acts like a victim. The link here .

In MySpace, there is a memorial profile. But you cannot participate unless already a friend. In Facebook, there are many groups under "megan meier" here.

Cyberbullying exists as well in adulthood. Check this post.
